Try These Tips for Calm, Clarity, and Immune System Support during Cold, Flu, and Virus Season

Useful preventative measures:

  • Washing your hands with soap and water

  • Using sanitizers when you are in public – especially after encountering door handles, shopping carts, gas pumps, etc.
Avoiding close contact with those that are sick with colds, flus, and viruses

  • Staying home if you are sick

  • Eating well: Eating a healthy, organic, plant-based diet gives you the phytonutrients needed for healthy immune function.  Plants are full of the healthy vitamins and micronutrients that keep cells healthy, like Vitamin C, Vitamin A, zinc and other trace elements needed to support immune cells.

  • Managing your own stress or anxiety (stress can lower your immunity to illness)

    • Practice yoga and meditation: make sure to take a few minutes, ideally up to 20, for mindfulness practices, walks, quiet sitting, or join any of Inner Connections yoga classes, especially toward the end of the day when you’ve put in hours of work and may be pushing your limits. Don’t forget the healing that comes from Savasana (allowing your nervous system to reset); meditation increases expressions of genes that are beneficial to the immune system and supports immune function.

    • Use SALT: Book an appointment in our Salt Room once we are able to reopen! Germs and bacteria hang out in your nose and throat 24 hours before digging into your blood stream and affecting your immunity, and salt clears them out. Use our ROCK SALT THERAPY at ICY and saltwater rinses as preventative measures or when you start to feel sick; gargle with warm saltwater and use a neti pot to ward off illness.

    • Get a good night’s sleep: A balanced circadian clock is directly linked to a strong immune system, according to Ayurveda, and Nobel Prize-winning science, too! Sleep can boost T-cells which helps fight disease, especially viral diseases. Get at least 7-8 hours of natural, restful sleep.

    • Consider Supplements:  If you don’t have access to fresh-cooked meals, supplements can help provide vitamins and minerals essential for a robust immune response. Also, try fresh herbs to help strengthen immunity. Ashwagandha, amalaki, holy basil, echinacea, and elderberry have been known to increase the activity of immune cells that help you fight infection and can reduce the severity of symptoms if you do become ill. Of course, always be sure to check with your practitioner before beginning any regimen of supplements.

    • Be Positive: A good attitude, fresh perspective, and the great outdoors help us to connect with ourselves on a deeper level and remain healthy. Walk your dog, enjoy the sunshine (or snow), and connect with the beauty around you. When you need, keep up to date with COVID-19 at the CDC website.
